3Commas-style DCA bots vs custom quant — where is the edge?

I ran 3Commas DCA bots on crypto for 18 months. Fine in ranges, brutal in trends, and the exchange outage risk is always there.

For those who moved from these platforms to fully custom systems: what did you actually gain, and what do you miss?

Gained: real risk controls — equity stops, volatility-targeted sizing, kill switches that actually fire. Missed: the 24/7 ops reliability. My custom stack broke more in its first month than 3Commas did in a year. Operational discipline is an underrated edge.

DCA bots are distribution machines for the same short-vol profile. The edge was never the bot; it's whether you pick sane pairs and sane kill switches. The platform is secondary — which is also why "my DCA bot is profitable" testimonials are mostly survivorship.

Fair. In hindsight my "edge" was mostly picking ranging alts and not getting greedy with leverage. The tool just automated a discipline I couldn't maintain manually. That might be the whole product, honestly.
